Concrete vs Pavers for a Driveway on the Sunshine Coast

For most Sunshine Coast driveways it comes down to the ground: a well-built concrete slab spans soft or moving ground better and asks for less upkeep, while pavers on a flexible bed tolerate movement on reactive hinterland clay or soft river-flat blocks and can be lifted and re-laid. On acid sulfate ground either option needs proper steel or edge protection, so your block often decides more than the look does.

Both make a good driveway when they are built for the site, and both fail when they are not. Here is how concrete and pavers really compare across the Coast, and how the local ground should steer the choice.

How the Sunshine Coast ground tips the decision

This is where the choice is actually made. The Coast throws three kinds of difficult ground at a driveway, and each one leans the decision.

Reactive Blackall Range clay and basalt. Up in the hinterland behind Nambour, Palmwoods, Maleny and Montville the reactive clay and basalt swell when wet and shrink back when dry. That constant movement is hard on a rigid slab, so a slab here has to be properly based, steeled and jointed to cope. Pavers on a flexible bed can absorb some of that movement and be re-lifted if a section settles, which is a real point in their favour on the most reactive blocks.

Soft river-flat ground. Down on the low flats near the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers and around Pelican Waters the ground can be soft and the water table high. Soft ground favours whichever option is built to bridge it: a well-based concrete slab spans it, and pavers need a well-compacted, well-drained bed or they will rut and settle. A cheap version of either fails here.

Acid sulfate soils. The same low river-flat and canal blocks often carry acid sulfate soils, where acidic groundwater attacks steel. This does not pick a winner between concrete and pavers, but it changes how each is built. A concrete slab needs proper cover over the reinforcement and a corrosion-aware mix, and any steel edge restraint under pavers needs the same care. Get the steel protection wrong and either surface will fail from below.

So which should you pick?

As a rough steer: on a stable coastal block a well-built concrete slab is usually the lower-fuss, longer-run choice, and you can dress it up with a decorative finish. On very reactive hinterland clay, or where a section may need lifting for services, pavers on a flexible bed earn their place. On acid sulfate river-flat and canal ground, the surface matters less than getting the steel protection and drainage right, so pick on looks and maintenance and make sure whoever quotes it builds for the acidic ground.
